Export permit

If you wish to export samples collected during your research, please contact us as soon as possible so as to ensure effective and smooth processing. The application for the exportation must be filed no less than 30 days before your departure. You can initiate this process in Costa Rica. To do so, you must personally sign a document at the MINAE office in Golfito, declaring that you will not be conducting any genetic or biochemical analyses of your samples (Acuerdo de Trasferencia de Material).

This permit must be sought by all researchers who wish to export material samples (plants, animals, soils, etc.).
Period of validity: one permit is required for each export.

What is required?

  • Completed application form including a list of objects to be exported (download here)

  • Confirmation by a cooperating institution in Costa Rica (e.g., Museo Nacional or INBio)

How does one initiate the process?

Fill out the application and call/email the SINAC-MINAE. A personal visit is advisable.

Important: be sure to heed the CITES regulations!

Confirmation of the existing cooperation by the respective institution in Costa Rica (Museo Nacional – Telfax: 00506 22337164, email: museohn@sol.racsa.co.cr or INBio – Tel. 00506 22440690 or 22440692, Fax. 22442816) (usually issued immediately onsite).
Hand in this confirmation at the SINAC. The export permit is usually issued after 2-5 days (30 USD).

Note: For every herbarium sample that is exported, one duplicate must remain in the country (usually at the cooperating institute). Special conditions apply for animal samples, please request information from the cited institutions (also see guidelines for scientific permit from SINAC).
