A wide range of research can be undertaken at the La Gamba Field Station. Its immediate surroundings include several types of lowland rainforest, but also artificial ecosystems in the form of large areas of intensive agriculture that support the local economy. The station's biological research therefore covers topics such as biodiversity, whole-ecosystem functioning, and functional analyses of subsystems. Particular areas of focus include biotic interactions, such as those between plants and animals, and unusual reproductive systems. The field station's garden and a reforestation project provide an opportunity for controlled experiments under natural conditions.
